Sangeetha Kalanidhi Aruna Sairam (also spelled Sayeeram) is an Indian classical vocalist.
She is a recipient of the Padma Shri award from the Government of India and has been elected as Vice Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi (India's premier national institution for music and dance) by the Government of India.
In 2011, Aruna was the first Carnatic musician to perform at the The BBC Proms (more formally known as The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts) in London. Padma Shri Aruna Sairam has been selected for the Sangita Kalanidhi award, the highest recognition in Carnatic music, this year. This year’s award is a thumping validation of Sairam’s prodigious musical spectrum. Apart from her classical Carnatic core, she has managed to embrace various other genres of music, including the Marathi abhang and the bhajan.
She has brought in many innovations in the repertoire of concerts and is known to be a bold experimenter in pushing the borders of performance strategies. She was the first to introduce the Abhang, a distinctive folk music form from Western India, into a traditional southern Indian Carnatic concert. Apart from her core Music, Aruna sings in 14 different Indian languages as well as in French, German, Latin and Italian.
Her style is rooted in tradition, yet continues to evolve.
