Ashwani Shankar and JA Jayant Jugalbandhi concert

Richmond Rasikas is thrilled to co-host an upcoming Jugalbandhi concert featuring Ashwani Shankar on Hindustani Shenai and JA Jayant on Carnatic Flute as part of our Spring 2023 Series. The concert will take place on May 21st, Sunday, at 5:30 PM in Deep Run High School.


Both Ashwani Shankar and JA Jayant are young musicians who are making waves in the world of Indian classical music. Ashwani comes from the Banaras Gharana, a lineage of musicians known for producing some of the most talented musicians in Indian classical music history. He is carrying forward the 300-year-old family tradition and art of Shehnai playing to new heights. Ashwani's music is a perfect blend of traditional classical music with a modern approach, making it unique and exciting.


JA Jayant, on the other hand, is a young Carnatic Flute exponent who is popularizing the art of flute playing across the globe. He is known for his soulful and melodious playing style, and his deep understanding of the intricacies of Carnatic music. Jayant is also a dedicated teacher who has conducted workshops and masterclasses across the world, inspiring and educating young musicians who are eager to learn from him.




Together, Ashwani and Jayant will perform a Jugalbandhi, a duet performance where they will showcase their skills and talent in a beautiful musical conversation. It promises to be an evening filled with soulful and melodious music that will leave the audience mesmerized.

Rasikas Upcoming Events for 2023

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming events for 2023. Richmond Rasikas is committed to bringing the best of Indian classical music to the Richmond community. We have a lineup of talented artists and exciting concerts planned for the upcoming months.

  1. On March 10th, 2023, we are proud to present Shri Saketharaman, a renowned Carnatic vocalist. The concert will take place at 7 PM at Reynolds Community College on E. Parham Road. Shri Saketharaman is one of the top performing musicians of Carnatic music in India and a prime disciple of Padmabushan Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman. This is a concert that you do not want to miss.
  2. Next up on our calendar is Thygaraja Utsavam, which will take place on April 22nd, 2023, at the Hindu Center Auditorium. 
  3. On May 21st, 2023, we are excited to present a Carnatic-Hindustani Jugalbandhi featuring Flute J.A. Jayanth and Pt. Ashwani Shankar on the Shehnai. This unique concert will showcase the beautiful interplay of two different styles of Indian classical music. The concert will take place at a venue to be announced soon.
  4. Last but not least, our Fall Concert will feature Shri Sunil Gargyan, a prominent vocalist of the Kirana Gharana. The concert date and venue will be announced soon, so stay tuned for more information.

Saketharaman Carnatic vocal 2023



Richmond Rasikas is thrilled to present an upcoming Carnatic vocal concert by Saketharaman, as part of their Spring 2023 Concert Series. Saketharaman is an esteemed musician of Carnatic music, widely known and appreciated in India. He began his musical journey at the age of 4, under the guidance of Late Srirangam Krishnamurthy Rao, and later under the tutelage of Late Smt. Savitri Satyamurthy. He is a prime disciple of Padmabushan Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman and learns voice culture and Hindustani music from Sangeetha Kalanidhi Shri TV Gopalakrishnan, and rare kirthanas of Trinity and other yesteryear composers from Vid Shri Nagai Muralidharan.



Saketharaman has composed over 100 Pallavis that feature regularly in his concerts. He has also composed several thematic pallavis, such as "SaptaSwara SaptaRaga SaptaThala", "Ashta Gowlai", "Swarakshara", "Ranjani mala", "Pancha Ranga Kshetra", "Tamil Isai", and "Mysuru City".

In addition to his vocal prowess, Saketharaman is also a talented tunesmith, having set music to Mira Bhajans, Purandharadasar Devarnamas, compositions of Annamacharyar, Kanakadasar, Sadhasiva Brahmendral, and Subramania Bharathiar. He has presented a full-fledged 2.5-hour concert of Shri Adhi Shankaracharyar's works set to his own tunes in Bengaluru Gayana Samaj. He has also performed an exclusive concert on "Vada Naadu Divya Desams" of Alwar pasurams, set to tune by him.
