Carnatic vocal concert by Trichur Brothers

Sunday September 27th

Richmond Rasikas is proud to announce a Carnatic vocal concert by Trichur Brothers, as part of their 2015 Fall Concert Series.

Srikrishna Mohan and Ramkumar Mohan, popularly known as the Trichur Brothers, are eminent Carnatic musicians.

They are sons of Senior Mridanga Vidwan Shri Trichur R Mohan and belong to the 'Sitaram Group', a traditional business family based in Trichur, Kerala.

Trichur Brothers are noted for their strict adherence to Patanthara and uncompromising attitude towards Bhavam. They also adopt a unique style for alapana, where both exchange phrase after phrase, long and short, and participate equally in exploring a raga. Many well known critics have pointed that this is a unique and effective manner of raga delineation and that it is hitherto never attempted by any duo singers.

Carnatic Saxophone Concert by Kadri Gopalnath

Saturday April 18th

Richmond Rasikas is proud to announce a Carnatic saxophone Concert by Kadri Gopalnath, as part of their 2015 Spring Concert Series.

Kadri Gopalnath is an accomplished Indian saxophonist and one of the pioneers of Carnatic music on the saxophone. He acquired a taste for music from his father Thaniappa, a nadhaswaram vidwan. Young Gopalnath once saw the saxophone being played in the Mysore palace band set. Thrilled on hearing the vibrant tone of the saxophone, Gopalnath decided to master it. Gopalnath had to modify  the conventional alto saxophone to play Carnatic music, the mastery of which took him nearly 20 years.

So successful has this adaptation of the saxophone been that the great musician Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, the doyen of Carnatic music, has acknowledged Kadri Gopalnath as a true Carnatic musical genius. Gopalnath learnt the instrument under Gopalkrishna Iyer of Kalaniketana, Mangalore. In Madras, Gopalnath was mentored by mridangist T.V. Gopalkrishnan who identified the youngster's potential and played an instrumental role in channelizing his talent.

Gopalnath effortlessly plays the most complex and nuanced ‘gamakas’ of Carnatic music on the saxophone. He has equally enthralled audiences at jazz festivals across the world including the Jazz Festival in Prague, Berlin Jazz Festival, International Cervantino Festival in Mexico, Music Hall Festival in Paris, the BBC Promenade concert in 1994 at London, to name a few.

Titles and honors have come his way, the most cherished being the Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and the Shringerei Sharada Peetam. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004.

Great Composers Day 2014 (Event Report)

  • More than 120 participants performed at the 7th annual Great Composers Day (GCD) event hosted by Richmond Rasikas at the Hindu Center Auditorium on the 15th of November 2014.
  • The GCD opened with a series of slokams recited beautifully by the students from Richmond's Gurukrupa Sloka Group.
  • The participants of the day-long event, rendered the krithis of Dikshitar, Syama Sastri, Purandaradasa, Papanasam Sivan, Harikesanallur Muthiah Bagavathar and several other yesteryear composers.
  • We received suggestions / complaints from a couple of participants that there was some confusion regarding the scheduling and concerns about transparency of the same. The affected parties were contacted for clarifications and suggestions so that the process will evolve to handle the enormous volume that it is trying to accommodate in a single day.
  • In short, the concerns are duly noted by the Committee of Richmond Rasikas and we assure you that they will be adequately addressed in the upcoming Thyagaraja Utsavam to be held in the Spring of 2015.
  • If there are suggestions/comments for improvement or to volunteer at Richmond Rasikas events, please send us an email. The committee always tries its best to be fair to all participants and follow the published guidelines. However, there is always scope for improvements based on your valuable feedback.
