Richmond Rasikas is excited about your participation in our annual Thyagaraja Aradhana event. Registration for this event is now open. Please read the following GUIDELINES carefully before you register to perform in the upcoming Aradhana. We look forward to your support and patronage each year.

Participation Guidelines:
*** ALL TIME ALLOCATIONS INCLUDE ANY SETUP TIME REQUIRED ***
*** NO ALAPANA, NERAVALS or SWARAMS allowed except for the teacher category ***

(1) Individual Participants : 5 minutes maximum (one Krithi only)

(2) Group of two to 4 : 5 minutes maximum (not more than one Krithi)

(3) Group of 4 and above : 10 minutes maximum (no more than 2 Krithis)

(4) Greater Richmond Music Teachers : 15 Minutes ( with Ragam, Neraval and Swarams)

(5) Repeat Appearances: ONLY ONE repeat appearance may be requested using a separate registration form. Restrictions and limitations may be imposed based on the total number of participants. Back to back slots or time windows are not available for repeat performances. Please plan to stay back if you are requesting a second slot. Repeat performance follow the same free structure as the first performance. Participating in Group of 5 and above is not considered repeat appearance.

(6) Thyagaraja compositions mandatory for participants 12 years of age and over.

(7) After the registration is complete any changes to the request will need to be done via email communication with the entire committee at richmondrasikas@gmail.com. Individual committee members will be unable to make any change without the entire committee's explicit approval.

Ganesh Kumaresh, the world-renowned Violin duo are known for their scintillating and spirited Violin recitals since three decades.Their music is laden with pure virtuosity and brims with novel surges of soul stirring creativity soaked in Classicism. Their creative idiom is international and their communication through music crosses all physical boundaries.

Their trysts both at home and abroad have not been with just audiences of Indian origin but also have captivated audiences across the world keeping them spell bound and enthralled with electrifying energy.

Thavil maestro Tanjavur Govindarajan is on of the foremost exponent of the art form of playing the Thavil (barrel drum). He has been performing as a thavil vidwan(maestro) for the past 4 decades and has created a niche for himself as a very versatile and inspirational artiste. He is known for being very subtle and at the same time very dynamic on an instrument which is by itself very loud. He is the recipient of the Kalaimamani award conferred by the State Govt of Tamilnadu and has received many more awards and accolades from various organizations all over the world.

Patri Satish Kumar on the mridangum (carnatic double headed drum) is the one of the most sought after mridangum vidwans today. He has the unique quality of adapting his performance according to the nature of the artiste he is performing with and is a star among percussion players of India. He has been playing this instrument for the past 2 decades and has enthralled both the learned and uninitiated with his virtuoso performances. He is recipient of many awards and accolades from many leading organizations and has performed in many international festivals.

Performance Schedule for 2010 Great Composers Day

If you have registered to perform in this year's Great Composers Day scheduled for Saturday, October 30, 2010, the schedule has now been published and you can find your allotted time window here.

Due to the overwhelming number of registrations this year, we have had to extend the time window by one extra hour. Slots are allotted on a 'first come first served' basis. What this means is that those who registered early had a better chance of getting the time window of their preference.

Please plan to arrive 30 minutes before your time window and we hope that you will stay a while to support the other participants. We look forward to seeing you on October 30, 2010.

The dates for the Great Composers Day Celebrations have been announced. We invite one and all to be a part of this years event.

Here are some ground rules:

Please use the list of suggested composers from the 'Composer' field in the form and if you pick 'Other' please give details of the composer in the 'Additional Information' field.
For individuals, it is one song per participant. Please note that there will be no ragam, swaram or niraval presentation in this event. The duration of the song is not to exceed 5 minutes.
Group presentations (2 or more) will be allotted a maximum of 10 minutes. Groups are allowed to present more than one song within their 10 minutes slot.
Participant fee is $5.00. For a group presentation, each participant should pay $5.00.
If you participate in more than one presentation, you have to pay the participant fee of $5.00 only one time.
A participant may not participate in more than 2 performances on the stage due to the increased number of registrations. This does not include the opening group presentation of the day.

The Richmond audience was recently treated to an evening of soulful music, which was well pitched for both the casual and intellectual listener.

Sri Murthy and Sri Murugabhoopathy provided excellent support, weaving excellent supporting patterns all through the concert. We would recommend that carnatic fans all around the USA get to the nearest performance of Dr. Rama and her accompanists.

Prince Rama Varma-May2010

Shri. Prince Rama Varma and his accompanying artists, treated the Richmond area rasikas to a bhavam laden, soul filling vocal carnatic concert. His frequent and apt usage of the swaraksharams provided an aural treat to the audience. The prince was very engaging with the audience, providing them with nice anecdotes from his experiences with his Guru Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. He also extolled the virtues of the lyrics to many of the songs he presented, that helped the audience in appreciating the bhavam of his rendition.

Shri S. Varadarajan provided impeccable support with his soft and crisp handling of the violin and complimenting the vocalist with his deft strokes. Shri Patri Satish Kumar's playing needs special mention here. Apart from his brilliant touches through out the concert, he brought down the house with his thani avarthanam. To quote Prince Rama Varma "We went to see the Niagara falls yesterday. It looked impressive, but it didn't sound as impressive as he did", referring to the thani avarthanam.

The absence of a neraval or ragamalika swaram, viruththam, shlokam etc, was a small void.

2010 Thyagaraja Aradhana report

We, at Richmond Rasikas, wish to thank the many participants, both children and adults, who made our Thyagaraja Aradhana (8th annual celebrations) such a dashing success on May 1st, 2010. This years event was well supported by performers in and around town as well as from neighboring townships. Some of our performing guests came from D.C metro area, Charlottesville and Raleigh.

This year’s Thyagaraja Aradhana started off, as planned, with a group rendition of the Pancharatna Krithis followed by the Utsava Sampradhaya Krithis. This was followed by a day-long session of individual and group renditions of many more beautiful compositions. The day was devoted mostly to Thyagaraja kritis. A whole crew of percussionists supported the event, on the mridangam, ghatam and kanjira.

With around 80 plus participants pouring in with family and friends, including parents of a few visiting from India, the Twin Hickory community hall reminded many of a small Indian wedding in progress.

It was heartwarming to see so many young children from our own communities taking their first steps in the long and culture-rich journey of learning Carnatic music. We wish to convey a very special ‘thank you’ to all these children for coming forward to showcase their talents at our Aradhana. Also worth mentioning, was the increasing trend in adult participation for performance and the number of first time performers who took to the stage with comfort.

While the weather made it feel at par with the heat of Thiruvaiyaaru (the saint's village in Tamilnadu), our food vendor matched it up with a wonderful display of traditional items in line with the theme of the event.

To sum it up, this was yet another event in North America that reinforced the wealth of the carnatic classical system of music, using the compositions of the bard saint Sri. Thyagaraja. One downside was that as the event progressed the timeline was surely and steadily slipping. We will make every effort to make improvements on this issue.

We hope to see you all again at our ‘Great Composers Day’ event this Fall when we will be celebrating, as the name suggests, all the other great composers of carnatic music. Stay tuned to this website for the announcements related to this event.

Mandolin Duet Concert-Apr2009

The Richmond area rasikas were treated to a scintillating mandolin duet concert by Shri U.Shrinivas and U.Rajesh. The popularity of the brothers was very evident from the attendance at this concert. By all accounts, this was probably the largest audience Richmond Rasikas has ever had. Some estimates put it well over 250 people. They put on a great performance.

The Richmond rasikas were treated to a memorable Chitravina concert by Shri Ravikiran. The sound emanating from the instrument reflected the bhavam of the lyric and the curves of the sangathis. Ravikiran was very engaging with the crowd. He originally planned on playing the sahana krithi giripai. But upon a request from the audience to play a pallavi, he readily composed one, on stage, much to appreciation of the audience. Each and every one the raga alapanams, sketches or detailed, were a treat for the ears.

Ranjani Ramakrishnan and Ramesh Srinivasan provided excellent accompaniment support.

2009 Great Composers Day (Inaugural)

The inaugural Great Composers Day celebrations, organized by Richmond Rasikas, was a remarkable success. Thanks to all the children and adults who worked hard to put on a great show for the audience. From Abhinav Ramesh, who kicked off the individual singing session to Ms. Nidhi Kumar who concluded the proceedings with her well rendered mangalam, it was a very enjoyable event.

This year, we started a trend of learning some krithis as a group and render them as a group. This year we learnt and presented vAthapi ganapathim by Muthuswami Dikshitar in ragam Hamsadhwani and kAmAkshi ambA, Shyama Shastry's masterpiece swarajathi in the ragam Bhairavi. We look forward to this group becoming a larger one, in the coming years. Special thanks to Maya Ravindran, a middle school kid, who did a superb job teaching the Hamsadhwani krithi, to the group.

Special thanks to Mr. Sriram Rekapalli, for readily and graciously accepting our request provide accompaniment support for the group singing and for some individuals. He elevated this years singing quality to a whole another level, with his percussion prowess. We look forward to his continued support to our efforts to promote carnatic music in town.

Kudos to all the kids that took the time and effort, to make a presentation containing some known and some unknown facts about the great composers. It was a huge hit with the audience.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped to make this years event a success. A pat on the back is well deserved for all the committee members who worked tirelessly to put this event together.

The 2009 Thyagaraja Aradhana was a huge a success. Thanks to all the children and adults who worked hard to put on a great show for the audience. This year was special, considering the amount of new faces, kids and adults alike, who shed their inhibitions and decided to perform and indulge in the spectacle of carnatic music and the aradhana celebrations.

We thank Master. Arjun Raghavan, from Raleigh, and his parents for graciously accepting our invitation to provide accompaniment support in this event.
